Healthy Food for all goes into their third year!!!

East Belfast Mission’s Healthy Food for All Programme started in January 2010. The programme has been a great success and has been well received by both residents and ex–residents of our hostel. This year is the third year of the project and lots more is planned for 2012.

The monthly sessions will continue and other programmes will run alongside these.  Most of the sessions take place at re:fresh cafe and everyone is welcome to join in.

Details of the 2012 sessions will be on this page very soon.

During 2011 2055 meals have been provided by the HFFA programme.  Each monthly session in 2011 was aimed at improving health and wellbeing of local people through dietary and nutritional advice. We work in an area of social and economic deprivation with high levels of unemployment and ill–health and these interventions are having a hugely positive impact on the health of those who are most socially excluded.  We will continue the sessions in 2012 and hope to have even more people involved.

If you are interested, watch this page for all the session information for the coming months.

VOLUNTEERS CHRISTMAS DINNER IN CAFE

Wednesday 14th December was the EBM volunteers Christmas lunch in re:fresh. There was a great turn out and the 3 course meal was appreciated by all the volunteer staff who attended. There was a buzz in the air with Christmas music, a fabulous tree lit in the corner and a great atmosphere. As with every Christmas, the EBM staff gathered in force to serve the volunteers – a treat in itself for them – to show appreciation for the hours worked throughout the year.

Mark Houston, Mission Director thanked all the volunteers for their hard work and commitment and said the organisation could not do without their help.

Dessie Ferguson attended the lunch. Dessie volunteered for many years with EBM and still calls to see the volunteers in the clothes shop on a regular basis. There was a presentation to Dessie for all the years he has given so generously and he was very obviously touched by the gift.

Everyone left well fed and happy with their token gift and Christmas card. They thanked the cafe staff for a fabulous meal and wished everyone a Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year.

CHRISTMAS FAIR

On Saturday 3rd December, HFFA held a “Going Green” Christmas Fair.  There was a great array of stalls with free give–aways and other stalls selling goods.   We had Christmas trees and decorations for sale, free food items from our Going Green allotment were given out and we had Santa and a DJ with Christmas music playing which created a great atmosphere.

Meals on Wheels
We can provide hot meals for those that are housebound. If you are interested in signing up please contact us.

We deliver hot nutritious meals each day to the housebound who would otherwise be without a substantial meal. This service has grown dramatically in recent years and has experienced demand from agencies involved in the care of the elderly and the disabled, and is a lifeline to the many elderly who live on their own. Our Meals on Wheels service is conducted by staff and volunteers who can sometimes be the only visitors an individual may have in the course of the week.

for the numbers of meals delivered to local homes, within a radius of ten miles. Unfortunately, many of those housebound individuals who receive the meals on wheels service lack daily contact with friends or family. Our friendly staff and volunteers and the provision of a hot, nutritious meal can help alleviate some of the stresses of every day life for these individuals, as well as the feelings of loneliness and isolation.
